Hurricanes 0, Disaster Recovery 1

December 9th, 2008 by engage

Chalk one up on the scoreboard for Disaster Recovery (DR) this year. Ever since the brutal hurricane season of 2005, more and more business have been putting serious thought into disaster recovery plans. This year, according to an article from CRN, the hard efforts paid off. Though I haven’t come across any hard statistics on business shut downs for 2005’s Katrina vs. 2008’s Gustav, there are a number of anecdotal stories that suggest a high level of preparedness. The high profile example is the Louisiana Supreme Court, which shut down for months after Katrina. This time around though, they didn’t even experience a day of outage. The CRN story has it’s own examples of smaller businesses that weathered the storm much better this time around.

However, while it looks like the southeast may be learning, DR remains a harder sell in other parts of the country. As the midwest floods this fall showed, just because you’re not in a hurricane path doesn’t mean your business is immune. Especially now that the economy is slowing down, many businesses will start reconsidering the DR programs they began working on earlier this year. But there are a lot of reasons why businesses should think first before doing this. In fact, a down economy may be the worst time to cut backup and disaster recovery, because if a disaster does hit, you probably won’t have the resources to recover as easily. 2007 Best’s Underwriting Guide by AM Best, found that only 6 percent of companies who experience catastrophic data loss survive. The other 94 percent? Well 43 percent never reopen and 51 percent close within two years of the disaster. Your data and your business continuity is critical to your business surviving, and more importantly recovering, from any type of breach, loss or outage.
